Chickens – great to have around! We’ve got three and they are our garden pets – with the added bonus of tasty eggs. One is tame enough to come up to me and sit on my lap and even cuddle under my arm! But they are a worry as foxes see them as a tasty treat, so locking them away in the darker hours is very important. We got home a little later than normal yesterday and convinced ourselves a fox had taken one. It turned up the next morning, but that was a fright.

One thing chicken keepers don’t highlight is the amount of chicken shit you get everywhere in the garden, especially the patio! Needs continual cleaning up, which I admit I don’t do enough, and does make good manure apparently, but does make casual visits to the garden more of an adventure. And now I have special garden shoes…

Right, off to do a chicken clean up…. 🙂

Very sad news.

Just after Easter all three chickens were killed and taken by a fox. It found a weak spot between two layers of chicken wire mesh and forced it’s way through. As we’re about to move house we’ll wait until then to make a fox-proof chicken run. Or maybe after this tragedy we may not keep any more chickens. We’ll see.
